Measuring Progress over Time – ATEC Score Sheet

ATEC stands for Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist. It’s like a checklist that can help parents / caregivers / therapists track how the child will progress with therapy after diagnosis.

Stephen M. Edelbrock, PhD and Ronald S. Prinz, PhD developed the ATEC score sheet.

They first published the ATEC in 1986 in the journal “Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology” as a tool to measure the effectiveness of different treatment modalities in children with disruptive behaviour disorders.

Think of it like a progress report for your child’s autism journey. It helps therapists see where your child needs more support and where they’re doing well.

It is simple enough to use on your own, and input the answers on the ATEC website to obtain the scores. You can find more information on the website to help you use it: Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC)

The good news is that the ATEC Score Sheet is available in English, Malay, and Chinese.

How to Read the ATEC Score Sheet

The sheet has four sections:

  1. Speech / Language / Communications
  2. Sociability
  3. Sensory/Cognative awareness
  4. Health/Physical/Behaviour

Each section has questions
These questions help us understand how your child behaves and interacts with the world.

You answer the questions
You’ll share your observations about your child’s behaviour, and the answers will be recorded on the sheet.

The score is calculated
The answers are then used to calculate a score for each section.
This helps you to understand your child’s strengths and areas where they need more support
