Understanding #ActuallyAutistic:
Listen to Autistic Voices

Navigating the world of autism can be both enriching and challenging for parents. You may have come across the hashtag #ActuallyAutistic on social media like Instagram™ and Tiktok™. What does it mean, and why is it important?

A lot of what you hear about autism will be from people who are not autistic.

That’s where #ActuallyAutistic comes in. It’s a group of autistic people speaking up about their own experiences. If you are autistic, this is one way to “find your tribe” and understand yourself better.

Here’s why that’s so important:

Authentic Perspective

#ActuallyAutistic helps you hear directly from autistic people. This can tell you a lot about your child’s feelings, what they like, and what challenges they face. This understanding can foster better communication and stronger relationships within the family.

Redefining Success

The #ActuallyAutistic movement questions what it means to be “normal” and supports neurodiversity. It suggests that parents should see success through their child’s special strengths and abilities instead of fitting into what society expects. This shift in perspective can lead to greater self-esteem and fulfilment for both the individual and their families.

Find Support and Friends

#ActuallyAutistic is a big community. Many parents like you will understand your situation, can share their stories, and help you through tough times.

Learn More

#ActuallyAutistic has personal stories and articles from an autistic’s perspective. It can help you understand autism better and be a better advocate for your child or yourself.

Think of #ActuallyAutistic as a powerful reminder that autistic people have unique perspectives and deserve to be heard and respected. By understanding that, you’re taking a big step toward a brighter future for your child and all autistic people.
